What is the difference between 5W-30 and 5W-40?
Both grades carry a 5W cold-temperature classification. The second number describes viscosity at normal engine operating temperatures: a 40 grade has higher viscosity than a 30 grade under the relevant grading conditions. That difference does not make one oil universally better for every car.
The W stands for winter, not weight. These numbers describe viscosity behaviour; they do not identify a brand, establish authenticity or replace a manufacturer approval. For the grading explanation, see the Castrol UAE viscosity guide.

Which one should you use in Dubai?
Choose a product your exact engine permits. Check the handbook’s viscosity guidance and required standards, then compare the supplied bottle and current manufacturer data. Castrol’s UAE 5W-40 product guidance also identifies viscosity and manufacturer specification as separate checks.
Driving in the UAE does not by itself establish permission to switch from 5W-30 to 5W-40. If the handbook allows more than one grade, check its stated conditions. Ask about your exact engine before changing the specification used for an oil change.
Why two oils with the same grade can differ
Compare the complete product name and approval wording, not just 5W-30 or 5W-40 on the front. Castrol’s UAE 5W-30 range shows separately named formulations with different specification details. A shared viscosity does not make those variants interchangeable.
